QRIC Media Release: Take home a retired racing greyhound this Christmas

Dog-lovers are encouraged to consider making room under their Christmas tree for a retired racing greyhound.

The Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) Queensland is hosting a pop-up information session to inform potential dog parents about the benefits of adopting or fostering this festive season.

GAP is run by the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) and is dedicated to finding homes for greyhounds that have retired from racing.

GAP Operations Manager Leah Kellaway said she wants as many greyhounds as possible to be in a home over Christmas.

“You don’t have to be considering a forever animal to support GAP’s work rehoming retired greyhounds,” said Leah.

“We encourage anyone who can open up their home to a dog for a few weeks over Christmas to consider signing up to be a foster carer.

“Foster carers are invaluable in GAP’s work finding the perfect retirement home for ex-racing greyhounds, as many of our dogs benefit from spending time in a home environment before being adopted.”

The free information session allows members of the public to meet the GAP team and learn more about their work liaising with greyhound owners and trainers to rehome retired racing dogs.

Attendees can learn more about the adoption and fostering processes and even register on the spot to be involved.

“From the moment you adopt with GAP, we are here to support you,” said Leah.

“Included in your $100 adoption fee are collars, leads and ongoing help and support for your greyhound.”

All GAP greyhounds available for adoption are health and behaviorally assessed, desexed, microchipped, and vaccinated. They also receive a dental examination and are treated against worms and fleas.
