QRIC Media Release: Queensland first steward exchange at famous Inter Dominion Championship

Wednesday 4 October, 2023

In a state first, the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) will welcome a Racing Integrity New Zealand steward to December’s Inter Dominion Championship final, as part of a steward exchange agreement.

New Zealand harness racing steward Matthew Sole will visit Queensland from December 13 to 17 to shadow QRIC stewards at pacing and trotting meetings, including the Inter Dominion final.

Up and coming QRIC harness racing steward Matthew Greentree will shadow Kiwi stewards during the weeklong festivities around the New Zealand Trotting Cup from November 13 to 18.

It is the first time Queensland and New Zealand have partnered in a stewards exchange.

QRIC Commissioner Shane Gillard said that the exchange is about improving stewarding procedures industry wide.

“This is a great opportunity for our stewards to network and get to know their colleagues from other jurisdictions,” he said.

“We are always looking for insights that will help us to improve the way we do things, and during these exchange visits, stewards can pick up tips and techniques that will allow us to build on our procedures.

“It will be a great opportunity for a New Zealand steward to witness the best pacers and trotters in Australia and New Zealand come together in Queensland.”

QRIC stewards will oversee the races throughout the Inter Dominion Championship, which returns to Albion Park for the first time in 22 years.

The championship will commence on Friday 1 December, with second and third round qualifiers to follow on Tuesday 5 December and Saturday 9 December.

The final will be held on Saturday 16 December.
