QRIC Media Release: Paws to pound the pavement at Sunday’s Great Global Greyhound Walk

22 September 2023

Hundreds of thousands of paws and feet will pound the pavement across the Globe this weekend at the annual Great Global Greyhound Walk.

Joining in on this pawsome event, the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) Queensland have organised two walks in Brisbane and Townsville but theres bound to be an event near you!

The free community event, which will be held worldwide on Sunday 24 September, is a chance for dog-lovers to get together and celebrate greyhounds. You can Find Your Local 2023 Walk Here! – Great Global Greyhound Walk

For those on Brisbane’s northside, GAP greyhounds and their humans will converge on Decker Park, Brighton to connect with the greyhound community for a beachside walk.

In North Queensland, the crowd will gather at The Strand in Townsville.

The Great Global Greyhound Walk started in the United Kingdom and broke records in 2022, with 10,620 greyhounds and sighthounds taking part in 432 walks across 29 countries.

GAP Queensland is run by the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) and works to rehome retired racing greyhounds as family pets.

QRIC Deputy Commissioner Natalie Conner said that GAP’s Great Global Greyhound Walks are a chance to promote greyhounds to the community.

“We know that greyhounds make great pets, and that there is a greyhound suitable for every kind of home environment,” she said.

“Whether you’re active and outdoorsy or a relaxed homebody, we work to match you with the right greyhound for your lifestyle.”

Everyone in the community is invited to attend the free events, to connect with other dog owners, meet and pat retired racing greyhounds, and learn more about GAP’s important work preparing retired racers for life in a family home.

Ms Conner said that all dog breeds and humans are invited to join the event, and that you don’t have to be a dog owner to come along.

“The Great Global Greyhound Walk is often the first time people in the community will meet a greyhound,” Ms Conner said.

“They’re often surprised by how gentle and friendly greyhounds are, and it’s a great opportunity for people to learn more about how GAP prepares retired racing dogs to family home life through behavioural training, foster care and lots of love.

“It’s also a great chance for our community of adopters and foster carers to connect and learn more about greyhound care and behaviour from GAP’s expert team.

“We love supporting our GAP community and seeing them build friendships around the state.”

If it’s love at first sight, you can even sign up on the spot at the walks to adopt or foster a GAP greyhound.

The Townsville Great Global Greyhound Walk will begin at The Strand at 8:30am this Sunday, while the Brisbane walk begins at Decker Park, Brighton at 9:30am.
