QRIC Media Release: Greyhound Winter Carnival commences 17 May

Wednesday 14 May 2025

Animal welfare, integrity and safety will be at the heart of the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC)’s operations throughout the Queensland Greyhound Winter Racing Carnival.

Participants from Queensland and across Australia are reminded of their obligations under the national and local Rules of Racing for the Winter Carnival.

The Carnival kicks off on Saturday 17 May, running until Saturday 5 July 2025, when the Carnival will wrap up with the running of the Group 1 Brisbane Cup.

Participants must abide by all national and local Rules of Racing. Interstate participants who stay in Queensland, across the Winter Carnival, are also required to notify QRIC Stewards of their and their dog’s location [under Rules of Racing, Greyhound Australasian Rule 34(7)].

QRIC’s Compliance Assurance Team will also operate throughout the Winter Carnival.

Chief Steward of Greyhounds, Andrew Spence, said participants should expect a strong presence from Stewards and QRIC’s Compliance Assurance Team, both on and away from race meetings.

“Both the Stewards and the Compliance Assurance Team work year-round to ensure compliance with the Rules of Racing. We will continue to conduct random and intelligence-led kennel inspections during the Winter Carnival to ensure welfare standards are met by all participants.”

“We thank all participants in advance for their cooperation to ensure high standards of animal welfare, safety and integrity throughout the Winter Carnival, he said.”

QRIC will also continue operating its ‘anywhere, anytime’ prohibited substance control strategy, with the sampling of all winners together with intelligence led samples being collected throughout the Carnival, both at or away from race meetings.
