QRIC investigators heading to Cairns Cup

The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) Integrity Investigations Team (IIT) are in the Cairns area today and will be on course at the Cairns Cup tomorrow engaging with industry participants and the public.

Racing Integrity Commissioner Ross Barnett said the operation, which will include stable inspections and human and animal testing was an important integrity measure around one of the biggest days on the Cairns racing calendar.

“This operation is a replication of the IIT activities carried out in Mt Isa yesterday when the club held its first TAB meeting for some time,” he said.

“The IIT conducted 13 stable inspections in Mt Isa resulting in one stewards’ direction relating to the disposal of medications and four racing participants were educated regarding appropriate treatment book keeping and recording.

“While the IIT reported trainers at the Mt Isa meeting were operating with a satisfactory level of compliance, a drug testing operation resulted in the standing down of one senior rider pending the outcome of secondary testing and a stewards’ inquiry.

“The Commission continues to work with the racing industry to provide confidence for the betting public in the integrity of race meetings throughout the State.”
