QRIC appeals QCAT decision on Currie jigger charges

14 September 2020

The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) has appealed the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) ruling that set aside an internal review which confirmed the Steward’s decision of May last year that found former Toowoomba Trainer Ben Currie guilty of jigger charges.

Stewards found Mr Currie guilty of engaging in an improper action following an investigation into text messages relating to the intention to use an electronic apparatus capable of affecting the performance of two horses.

On 20 August 2020 QCAT accepted Mr Currie’s appeal and ruled he did not breach AR175(a) setting aside the June 2019 internal review.

The Commission has appealed the decision to the QCAT appeals tribunal.
