No Place For Poor Behaviour Among Racing Participants
The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) has observed a noticeable increase in reports of poor behaviour through its Report Something hotline. Much of this misconduct occurs between participants themselves, though incidents involving poor behaviour toward non-racing individuals have also been recorded. The range of negative behaviours includes intimidation, verbal abuse, and social bullying, all of which undermine the integrity and camaraderie essential to the racing community.
QRIC acknowledges that the rise in such unacceptable conduct reflects broader societal challenges during these unpredictable times. However, accepting this trend without response would be a serious failure in its stewardship responsibilities. It is imperative for industry leaders and participants to take active steps to curb these behaviours and protect the racing environment.
Participants in the thoroughbred, harness, and greyhound codes are reminded that their respective rules explicitly prohibit threatening language, harassment, and bullying. The privilege of holding a racing licence comes with an expectation of professionalism and respect towards others. Breaches of the conduct standards are met with consequences, including fines and potential suspension of a participant’s licence. These measures ensure that the racing industry maintains high standards and deters conduct detrimental to the sport’s reputation.
QRIC urges all involved in the racing sector to embrace consideration as the cornerstone of positive workplace relationships. Mutual respect and understanding foster stronger connections among participants, leading to a more supportive network. This collaborative spirit not only improves daily interactions but also contributes to a sustainable and successful racing industry for everyone.
While challenges to appropriate behaviour exist beyond the racing world, QRIC remains committed to maintaining a respectful and fair environment. Upholding the standards of conduct not only protects individuals but safeguards the integrity and future of racing in Queensland. All participants are encouraged to reflect on their behaviour, recognise its impact, and strive toward a culture that values respect and professionalism at all times.
