Fast friends for $100 at major greyhound adoption event

9 September, 2022

Greyhound lovers can take home a fast friend for $100 during a major adoption event held by the Queensland Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP).

The inaugural GAP Fast Friends Adopt-a-thon will be held on September 15 – 17. Prospective adopters in southeast Queensland can register to visit the GAP adoption centre at Churchable, and meet former racing greyhounds looking for their retirement home.

Greyhounds are quiet and gentle dogs who thrive in a family environment. In March 2022, Stephanie Richardson adopted Snoops Doggy Dog from GAP, and said she has quickly become a irreplaceable member of the family.

“Snoops fits so beautifully into our lifestyle. She goes camping with us, goes walking with us, and she is so placid and kind,” said Ms Richardson.

“With a greyhound, you get all the de-stressing benefits of a dog with the walks and cuddles, but you don’t get any of the stress of adopting a dog because they don’t bark very often and they’re so relaxed.

“GAP was flexible and gave us guidance about how Snoops would fit into the household.

“They gave us constant support, calling to check on us and arranging play dates with other greyhounds. Part of the enjoyment of the process was knowing we had support and knowing we were doing something nice.”

GAP Queensland is run by the Queensland Racing integrity Commission. Commissioner Shane Gillard said that dogs at the Fast Friends Adopt-a-thon will be categorised by the home environment that best suits them.

“Whether you’re looking for a dog that’s playful and energetic, good with small children or a relaxed indoor pet, our GAP experts will be able to help you find a fast friends that fits into your home,” Mr Gillard said.

“GAP greyhounds spend time with carers before being made available for adoption – by the time you meet them, they are ready to settle into a home environment.”

All GAP greyhounds available for adoption are health and behaviourally assessed, desexed, wormed, microchipped, and vaccinated. They also undergo a dental examination and treatment.

Retired racing greyhounds are available for adoption across Queensland from GAP year-round. GAP’s $100 adoption fee includes kibble, collars, leads and ongoing help and support for your greyhound from the GAP experts.

Register now to attend the GAP Fast Friends Adopt-a-thon.
