Apprentice jockey suspended over betting activity

3 February 2021

Apprentice jockey Joshua Morrow has been suspended for four months after pleading guilty to betting.

Mr Morrow placed 65 bets totalling $8,807 on Thoroughbred races between April and June last year through betting accounts in his name.

At a Steward’s Inquiry Mr Morrow pleaded guilty to breaching AR rule 115(1)(c)

A jockey or apprentice must not:

bet, or have any interest in a bet, or facilitate a bet, on any race.

Acting Racing Integrity Commissioner Mark Ainsworth has expressed his disappointment that an apprentice would jeopardise his career and deliberately flout the rules.

“This should serve as a deterrent to all participants that these activities are not tolerated,” he said.

Mr Morrow’s suspension commenced on 25 January 2021 and remains in place until 25 April.
