QRIC Thoroughbred Training Series- Mental health awareness!

19 December 2023

As the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission Chief Stipendiary Steward, I am reaching out to highlight the crucial importance of mental health awareness within our industry.

In recent times, there has been growing recognition of the unique challenges faced by individuals in the horse racing community, including jockeys, trainers, stable staff, and officials.

The demanding and unpredictable nature of our sport can contribute to stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues.

As leaders in the industry, it is our responsibility to address and support the well-being of all racing participants.

To foster a culture of openness, understanding, and support, I encourage all stakeholders to prioritise mental health awareness.

We must acknowledge the pressures associated with the industry, such as the intense competition, financial considerations, and the physical demands of the job. Along with these, the pressures of social media on industry participants cannot be underestimated and many of us feel that pressure in different ways.

By acknowledging mental health awareness, we can work together to create an environment that promotes the mental well-being of our industry.

It is crucial that we reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage open communication within our industry.

By raising awareness and providing accessible resources, we can contribute to the overall health and resilience of our participants.

Let us come together as a community to prioritise the mental well-being of those who contribute to the success of the Queensland thoroughbred industry.

Your support and commitment to this cause will undoubtedly make a positive impact on the lives of many.
