HRA temporarily suspends use of the Rio Cobra Sulky

26 July 2023

The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) in consultation with Harness Racing Australia (HRA) has temporarily suspended the use of the Rio Cobra Sulky.

After two incidents in recent days where the Rio Cobra Sulky frame has collapsed, the decision, effective immediately has been made, in conjunction with the HRA, and the manufacturer (Garrard’s) to suspend the use of the sulky until a full investigation can be undertaken.

QRIC Chief Harness Steward David Farquharson said the popular sulky was in use by many Queensland Harness racing participants and understands the impact of this decision on them, however the safety of drivers and horses is paramount.

The suspension of the use of the Rio Cobra Sulky will be in place until further investigations and testing can be completed at the HRA testing laboratory in Geelong.
