Paws Pound the Pavement for Greyhound Adoption Awareness

Paws (and feet) will pound the pavement this weekend at the annual Great Global Greyhound Walk, presented by the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP).
The Great Global Greyhound Walk is a free event that will be held in almost 30 countries on Sunday, September 25. The walk is a chance to raise awareness about what great pets greyhounds are, while giving greyhound owners the opportunity to meet and socialise.
The walks in Townsville and Brighton in southeast Queensland are also an opportunity for dog lovers who are considering adoption and foster care through GAP to learn more.
Attendees can meet GAP greyhounds and chat with the GAP team about adopting or fostering a retired racing greyhound.
In July, Matt and Sally Busteed and their three teenage children adopted two-year-old Spencer. They said if anyone is thinking of getting a dog, they should consider adopting through GAP.
“GAP is so good. There are so many checks and balances to make sure the dog is a good fit in the home.
“Spencer is just such a good dog. He’s so casual. He can just stand there for hours while you pat him. It’s unbelievable. I can’t do justice to his personality.”
Queensland Racing Integrity Commissioner Shane Gillard said the Great Global Greyhound Walk is a chance to promote greyhounds to the community.
“Not everyone knows that greyhounds are relaxed, placid and low-maintenance, so they make great family pets.
“The GAP team has a great relationship with racing greyhound owners, so we have a lot of former racing greyhounds who are ready to move into a retirement home.
“The Great Global Greyhound Walk is a chance for us to encourage more people to see the benefits of adopting a retired racing greyhound.”
The Townsville Great Global Greyhound Walk will begin at The Strand at 8am this Sunday, while the Brisbane walk begins at Decker Park, Brighton at 9am.
