QRIC stewards oversee remote Queensland camel races

12 August 2022

The integrity of Australia’s richest camel race at Boulia last month was up to the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) stewards, showing the diversity and flexibility of their role at a total of three camel race meetings.

Racing Integrity Commissioner Shane Gillard said while camel races were not the usual racing event for our stewards, their oversight of these events was part of ensuring that everything was above board when the public bets on racing animals.

“Not only are these popular events a novelty for our stewards, the geographic logistics of getting there saw them travel from Brisbane, 1,668 km to Bedourie, 1719km to Boulia and a further 299kms to Tara,” he said.

“The camel races are major tourist attractions for these small communities and the Commission plays its part to make them happen with integrity.

“The stewards’ oversight is required as the 11 bookmakers who worked the remote events are licensed by the Commission and when Racing Queensland approve these events as a sporting contingency, our stewards step up and have a role.”

The Commission is currently advertising for more stewards, including for cadets to work in all codes of racing, as well as veterinarians and sample collection officers so if you’re interested in any of these diverse and interesting careers, contact us at careers@qric.qld.gov.au.
