Media statement: QRIC’s commitment to ensuring equine welfare
17 February 2025
A core role of the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) is to safeguard animal welfare. Whilst the primary obligation for the welfare of racing animals’ rests with their owners and trainers, the QRIC plays a vital role in the enforcement of these animal welfare obligations in line with its statutory responsibilities.
The QRIC’s responsibilities extend on and off the racetrack. Safeguarding animal welfare involves race-day veterinary services, non-race day stable and kennel inspections, anti-doping as well as investigating potential breaches of the Rules of Racing.
The QRIC is aware of an incident in Cairns over the weekend which is currently being investigated.
As the QRIC continues its mission to enhance the welfare of racing animals, it remains committed to protecting the integrity of the racing industry and ensuring the safety of all participants.
