Industry Notice: Queensland announces new barrier loading procedure

In a significant move aimed at enhancing the safety and integrity of horse racing, the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) has recently announced the implementation of a new barrier loading procedure set to take effect 1 July 2025.

Under this new protocol, all horses competing in races conducted in Queensland will be required to load into the starting barriers in their designated order, with no exceptions for late loads, as was previously permitted on application.

QRIC Chief Thoroughbred Steward, Josh Adams, emphasised the importance of this change, highlighting that this is a progressive step to bring Queensland in line with other states, and to improve the integrity, safety and animal welfare at thoroughbred race meetings.

“This decision is about protecting the safety and welfare of both the horses and the participants involved whilst also ensuring a fair and orderly start to each race,” he said.

“By aligning our procedures with those in other states, we are creating a level playing field for all competitors.”

From 1 January 2025, QRIC will progressively implement the new procedure – no longer granting late load permissions.

This will allow trainers, jockeys and other industry participants ample time to adapt to the new procedures that come into effect on 1 July.

Mr Adams confirmed that, to assist participants in transitioning to the new loading order, stewards will closely monitor any horses currently allowed to load late.

“We understand the change may be challenging in a number of cases, but our primary goals are the wellbeing of horses and participants, and ensuring the integrity of the sport,” Mr Adams added.

Mr Adams also said that all industry participants, including trainers, jockeys and owners are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the new procedures, and to plan accordingly ahead of the implementation.
