Industry Notice: Preparing your animals for the threat of cyclones
With tropical cyclone advice currently in place for North Queensland from the Bureau of Meteorology, we encourage you to review your emergency plan.
How can I protect my horse or greyhound in the event of extreme weather?
Prepare an emergency evacuation plan in advance, in case you need to move your animals with you to a safe place. This may be necessary if you receive an evacuation order, or if you believe your stabling or kennel may pose a danger to your animals.
Consider an emergency evacuation plan if your stabling or kennel is:
- Prone to flooding
- Exposed to high winds
- At risk of flying debris
- Able to be accessed safely after an extreme weather event
Prepare an emergency kit, containing:
- Wire cutters
- Rope
- Halter
- Lead
- First aid items
Before the storm begins, check the paddock for any hazards, including:
- Damaged fences
- Sharp items
- Potential projectiles
Power lines and loss of power
Try to make sure that your horse is not left in a paddock where there are power lines, in case they come down during the storm.
Make sure that your animals have access to at least a week’s worth of safe food and water. Do not rely on automatic water systems, as power may be lost.
After the emergency
Survey the area for hazards such as:
- Sharp objects
- Dangerous materials
- Fallen power lines
- Contaminated water
Remember to always assume that fallen power lines are live and dangerous. Don’t touch fallen power lines, but rather report any fallen power lines through the Get Ready Queensland website.
