A jam-packed month of events in Queensland for National Greyhound Adoption Month
4 March 2023
Dreaming of a dog? Now’s the time to adopt a greyhound.
GAP Queensland has greyhounds ready to meet their new families this National Greyhound Adoption Month in April.
GAP Operations Manager Leah Kellaway said the GAP is celebrating National Adoption Month with a jam-packed calendar of events across Queensland hosting an event each weekend throughout the feature month.
“Our Open Day on Sunday 16 April 2023, at our South-East Queensland GAP facility at Churchable is when we throw open our doors and show off our facility including the learning space, veterinary surgery, the kennels and the free run space,” she said.
“The GAP team will be available to answer questions about the adoption and foster process, general greyhound behaviour (including myth busting).
“We’d like to encourage greyhound owners and trainers to explore our facility and find out about the intake process for your greyhounds including information about how to prepare your greyhound for the GAP pre-assessment.”
Tours can be booked here on the GAP website on the Open Day event page.
The GAP aims to adopt as many greyhounds as possible throughout April. Potential adopters are welcome to check out the GAP website (gapqld.com.au) to see our dogs available for adoption and to find out about other Adoption Month activities and events.
Applications for a greyhound can be made on the GAP website as usual and in a first for GAP Queensland there will also be some ‘ready dogs’ available for the public to take home from Open Day if their needs and yours match.
We’ll have the dogs’ adoption profiles including their characteristics ready to check out when you get to Churchable on Open Day and if everything lines up you could pick up your greyhound on adoption day.
Ms Kellaway said GAP is committed to matching the right greyhound with the right person and home environment.
“This is achieved by getting to know each greyhound individually through comprehensive behavioural assessments and by working with potential new adoption families to understand their family and home situation and pet needs,” she said.
“Adoption Day is one of our signature events in the calendar and we encourage everyone to support these days through spreading the word as the more foster carers and adoptions we get, the more greyhound intakes we can provide to industry members looking to rehome their retired racers.
For Easter we’re asking Queenslanders to think about a different pair of cute long ears-make it greyhounds’ ears that are on your mind as you welcome a new member of the family in the form of an adorable hound.
“We’ll finish the month with an event for Brisbane City dwellers with an adoption day and doggie fashion parade at Albion Park raceway.”
Keep an eye on our website and our socials for updates and details for what is sure to be our biggest GAP adoption month ever.
