Standardbreds to take centre stage with Thoroughbreds at the Ekka
7 June 2022
This year for the first time at Ekka, the prestigious Thoroughbred Day will showcase Standardbred classes.
To celebrate this inaugural event, there will be a 1000 per cent increase in prize money for the Standardbred classes, matching the prizemoney for the Thoroughbreds.
The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) is sponsoring all Standardbred classes and several of the Thoroughbred classes at the Royal Queensland Show Thoroughbred and Standardbred Day in the Main Arena at the Brisbane Showgrounds on Monday 8 August.
QRIC Commissioner Shane Gillard, said showcasing the Off the Track pursuits of racing animals at the Ekka was a great opportunity to show off these amazing breeds to the show going public.
“Animal Care is paramount to the Commission, and this gives us the chance to support the skills of horses and competitors are after racing,” he said.
These racing breeds will compete for the prestigious Champion of their Breed title on the first day of the Ekka horse competition.
One of the most glamorous days on the Ekka schedule, Standardbred horse handlers will present their horses to the judges in formal race attire.
The 2022 event will showcase performance breeds including young stock, some still in their racing prime, and others excelling in the show ring after racing.
Entries are now open for Thoroughbred and Standardbred Day, closing on Monday 1 August 2022.
