Grants program helps to rehome greyhounds

The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission Racing Animal Welfare grants program has directly resulted in 15 ex racing greyhounds from Queensland greyhound adoption group Love a Greyhound Inc. being de-sexed, vaccinated and having dental treatment.

In excellent news each of the dogs which has had most of its treatment paid for through the RAW grants program has now been rehomed to a loving Queensland family.

This is the first of the 2019 grant program recipients to report they had concluded their grant activity.

Racing Integrity Commissioner Ross Barnett said it was pleasing to see these results coming from the Commission’s first grants program which was aimed at racing animal welfare outcomes in line with the Commission’s Animal Welfare objectives.

The Racing Animal Welfare grants program aims to support eligible organisations to promote and support the Commission’s animal welfare objectives including maximising the post-racing career opportunities for racing animals.

“It was unfortunate for many of last year’s grant recipients that they haven’t been able to fulfill their grants activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic but there is an extension to the time recipients have to fulfill their activities,” he said.

The 2020 RAW grants program was launched on 1 July and the Commission is looking forward to receiving applications for a new round of activities until 31 August.

This grants round will see funding of up to $5000 available per application. One project per application will be accepted and up to three separate applications will be permitted from any one eligible organisation.
