QRIC appoints a new head scientist and senior Gold Coast Steward

International search finds Commission’s new head scientist

The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) has appointed a new Director to head the Commission’s analytical services Racing Science Centre.

An international recruitment process has resulted in Dr Shawn Stanley being appointed in the Commission’s head scientist role.

With more than 30 years’ experience in racing chemistry around the world, most recently as chief analyst with the Singapore Turf Club Laboratory Dr Stanley has a long standing interest in improving both the efficiency and sensitivity of anti-doping analysis of equine, canine and human samples.

Racing Integrity Commissioner Ross Barnett welcomed Dr Stanley’s appointment, noting how this critical role was essential in maintaining the confidence of the racing industry.

“In the last financial year 19,985 racing animal samples were tested for prohibited substances and this work is of paramount importance,” he said.

“It is important that the Commission is up to date with the latest in testing procedures from around the world to deal with the complexities of substances and the innovations in testing technology.

“Dr Stanley who has also held a senior role with Racing NSW, will provide us with his experience and knowledge to ensure we continue to be on top of best worldwide practices as he works with our experienced analytical team.

“With Dr Stanley on board this commences a new era for the Commission’s analytical services business unit. “

Dr Stanley said he was very excited to be joining QRIC at a time when the Racing Science Centre’s capabilities are undergoing a period of significant renewal and regeneration.

“It is an honour to be entrusted with the responsibility of guiding the staff of the analytical services unit towards the critical goal of enhancing our testing methods and to play a role in forging strategies that ensure that there is a level playing field for all participants in the three racing codes,” Dr Stanley said.

“The icing on the cake is that stunning Queensland is about to become my new home.”

Dr Stanley will take up his appointment next month.

Senior steward Paul Gillard takes the reigns at the Gold Coast

The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) has appointed experienced Senior Stipendiary Steward Paul Gillard to lead the Gold Coast stewarding operations.

Mr Gillard who has more than 25 years’ stewarding experience says he has a life-long passion for thoroughbred racing.

“I have been involved in racing my whole life, it really is in my blood and this opportunity at the Gold Coast is a further opportunity to hone my craft,” he said.

Racing Integrity Commissioner Ross Barnett said the permanent appointment of such a competent and respected steward reflected the importance of the Gold Coast as a major racing community in the State.

“With the planned upgrade and expansion of the Gold Coast facility, the volume and quality of racing will continue to expand, and it’s important the Commission provides a high standard of integrity and consistent application of the rules,” Mr Barnett said.

Mr Gillard said his stints throughout the state including in Brisbane, Rockhampton and Townsville have given him the opportunity to experience thoroughbred racing in the South East, Eastern Downs, Capricornia, Central West, Leichhardt, North West Queensland and in the Far North.

“I’ve been fortunate to meet and work with many racing clubs and licensees closely, providing me with lasting and treasured memories, which I trust will never be lost,” he said.

“Whilst there is some sadness in leaving my current role as Senior Steward in North Queensland, where I have built a great rapport with industry participants, I am looking forward to the new and exciting challenge of the Gold Coast.

“Gold Coast racing has gone from strength to strength and the recent Magic Millions carnival was a great example of the calibre of racing that attracts a national and international audience on the Coast and I’ll enjoy being part of that growth.”

Mr Gillard will commence his Gold Coast role next month.
