Key Points

  • Greyhounds must be kept at the registered address of their trainer or owner unless Stewards have approved another location in writing
  • The alternate carer must be registered with the Controlling Body
  • Accurate, up-to-date treatment records must be kept for every greyhound in care
  • Records must include all vaccinations and treatments, and be retained for at least two years
  • Records must include key details such as the greyhound’s name, treatment, dose, route, date/time, and signatures.

Participants are reminded that greyhounds must be kept at the registered address of their trainer or owner unless prior written approval is granted by Stewards.

Participants are also required to keep complete, accurate and up-to-date treatment records for every greyhound in their care.

These obligations support welfare, transparency, and compliance with the Greyhounds Australasia Rules.

Greyhound location and control

All greyhounds must be always kept at the registered address of their trainer or owner unless otherwise permitted by the Stewards.

If a participant wishes to keep a greyhound at another location, written approval must be obtained from the Stewards before the arrangement begins.

The greyhound must be placed with another person who is registered with the Controlling Body, and that person must provide written consent to act as carer for the specified period.

Applications will only be considered where the requirements of Greyhounds Australasia Rule 34 are met, and any unauthorised change to a greyhound’s location or control may result in disciplinary action.

Treatment records

Under GAR 151, the person in charge of a greyhound must keep and retain written records of all vaccinations, antiparasitics and treatments administered from the time the greyhound enters their care until it leaves their care.

These records must be kept for a minimum of two years. Each treatment record must be completed by midnight on the day the treatment is given and must be produced for inspection if requested by the Controlling Body, a Steward, or an authorised person.

What must be recorded

Treatment records must include the greyhound’s name, the date and time of treatment, the name of the treatment, the route of administration, the amount given, and the name and signature of the person or persons administering and/or authorising the treatment.

For the purposes of GAR 151, ‘treatment’ includes controlled drugs, prescription animal remedies, prescription only medicines, injectable substances, pharmacist only and pharmacy only medicines, and veterinary or other medicines containing scheduled or unscheduled prohibited substances.

Failure to comply with GAR 151 may constitute an offence and may result in disciplinary action. Participants should review their current practices to ensure records are complete, accurate and available when required.
