Key Points:

  • cognitive (COG) tests are mandatory for Jockeys and Apprentice Jockeys
  • completing an annual test is a licencing requirement
  • tests establish a baseline of cognitive function
  • book in for tests now.

The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) is reminding all Jockeys and Apprentice Jockeys of the importance of completing their COG test to maintain their racing licences.

The annual test is part of QRIC’s broader safety measures, which aim to mitigate risks and promote the health and safety of all Jockeys.

This essential requirement is also part of QRIC’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all participants in the racing industry and the welfare of racing animals.

Cognitive testing is a key safety measure and plays a critical role by establishing a baseline of Jockeys’ cognitive function, which can then be used to assess their recovery after sustaining a head injury or concussion, ensuring they are suitable to return to riding.

The COG test is conducted using a computer-based platform that evaluates reaction time and cognitive abilities, ensuring Jockeys and Apprentice Jockeys meet the necessary standards to perform their duties safely and effectively.

By completing the test, Jockeys and Apprentice Jockeys not only meet a licensing requirement but also satisfy an important component in safeguarding their health and careers.

Safety focus

The annual COG test is just one component of QRIC’s broader safety framework.

QRIC has a suite of measures in place to protect Jockeys and Apprentice Jockeys including concussion protocols, as well as ongoing education and support.

The COG test is a cornerstone of this framework, ensuring that tools to effectively monitor and manage the health of riders, are in place.

Key dates and booking information

For 2026, bookings opened on Monday 1 June, and all tests must be completed by Saturday 1 August.

Jockeys and Apprentice Jockeys must call their local Steward’s office to schedule an appointment.

QRIC is committed to making the process as seamless as possible. Contact details for Stewards can be found here: Thoroughbred-Stewards-Contact-Details_Jun-2026.pdf

What happens if you don’t complete the test?

Stewards remind all participants that failure to meet the requirement by the stipulated deadline may result in your licence becoming voided. This means you will not be able to participate in races until the requirement is fulfilled.

If you have questions about the COG testing process or your licensing requirements, QRIC’s Customer Services team is available to assist:
